UPDATED WITH NEW INFORMATION:

The official White House version of President Trump’s executive order on social media has been released, and a part of it is even more disturbing than the draft version that leaked online.

Users can be “monitored” not only based on what they’ve posted BUT OTHER USERS THEY FOLLOW.

The relevant portion:

(b) Complaints described in section 4(b) of this order will be shared with the working group, consistent with applicable law. The working group shall also collect publicly available information regarding the following:

(i) increased scrutiny of users based on the other users they choose to follow, or their interactions with other users;

The earlier version of this blog post appears below:

A draft version of the president’s executive order on social media will give the Attorney General the ability to create “watch-lists” of social media users, their likes, follows, how much time they spend on the internet, etc… AND THEIR ACTIVITIES OFF THE PLATFORM.

That means the Attorney General can monitor you based on what you post on social media in your offline activities. These watch-lists will be created from “complaints” sent to the White House from other social media users.

In other words, if a supporter or even opponent of the president sends a complaint because they don’t like what you posted about the president or the administration, you’ll be added to the watch-list and you can be “monitored” in your offline activities.

Here is the relevant portion of the draft order (emphasis mine):

Section 5. State Review of Unfair or Deceptive Practices.

(a) The Attorney General shall establish a working group regarding the potential enforcement of State statues that prohibit online platforms from engaging in unfair and deceptive acts and practices. […]

(b) The White House Office of Digital Strategy shall submit all complaints described in Section 4 (b) of this order to the working group, consistent with applicable law. THE WORKING GROUP SHALL ALSO COLLECT PUBLICLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION REGARDING THE FOLLOWING:

(i) MONITORING OR CREATING WATCH-LISTS OF USERS BASED ON THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH CONTENT OR USERS (E.G., LIKES, FOLLOWS, TIME SPENT): AND

(ii) MONITORING USERS BASED ON THEIR ACTIVITY OFF THE PLATFORM.
