The Day The Earth Stood Still is a classic film and on my list of all time great sci-fi movies. So when I heard they were remaking it, I felt just a bit of trepidation. Then when I heard that Keanu Reeves was starring in it, I felt much more trepidation. Maybe a little heartburn. Okay, I had a bit of reflux. Not because I don’t like Keanu — I’ve enjoyed him in some things, in others, well… I’ll be kind. But Keanu just doesn’t strike me as the right choice for a remake of such a classic film.
The new trailer for it is now up on Apple’s movie site. It looks like it has some other fine actors in it, most notably (to me, anyway) Jon Hamm, the lead from Mad Men, a fantastic show on AMC. Hamm is a great actor and about one good role away from being a monster presence on the screen.
Kathy Bates and Jennifer Connelly are in it too. Wait, Jennifer Connelly you say? Okay, maybe it’ll be worth the ticket price.
The special effects appear, of course, to be updated. But we all know that updated special effects do not necessarily a great remake make.
I still feel like this new The Day The Earth Stood Still is going to be a misfire.
